Endless creativity woven into each chord
and each obiage
Ryukobo has continued to create countless kumihimo braids for over 130 years as a family business from its location in Nihonbashi.

Founded in Nihonbashi (Ningyocho), Ryukobo is a long-established "kobo" workshop focused on the creation of kumihimo. Skilled craftspeople carefully dye and braid each individual silk thread under a philosophy of "Creativity in every cord". The workshop has traditionally produced obijime, decorative strings to hold "obi" kimono belts in place, and obiage, sash-like ornaments worn over obi belts, and other kimono accessories, but in recent years it has expanded into new fields and challenges including chairs, umbrellas, stationary, and other items, taking kumihimo beyond the world of traditional Japanese clothing.

The workshop's kimono obijime are beloved by members of the Japanese Imperial Household, and figures in the Kabuki and other traditional Japanese culture worlds, and in recent years the workshop has continually pushed the boundaries of kumihimo's potential, including collaborating with Noritaka Tatehana, who is known for his work on Lady Gaga's heel-less shoes, on the "KUMIHIMO Heel-less Shoes", as well as working on displays for overseas fashion stores, and more.
