Kumihimo originates during the Nara Period, and was once widely used in functional items such as arms and armor, and Buddhist ritual implements, and today lives on mainly in the form of traditional Japanese clothing accessories and decorative elements. A variety of different styles, including Mitake-gumi, Kara-gumi, and Yurugi-gumi, and different braiding stands (marudai, kakudai, ayatakedai, takadai, etc.) are used to create delicate patterns and dimensionality.
